FIRST POETRY PRIZE WINNER –
WINTER 2019 – 2020
is MISS NATALIE PETERSON
of LONDON, ENGLAND – UK
“AFRICA HERE I COME”
HOW MANY UK BORN AFRICANS CAN SAY THEY ALWAYS WANTED TO PLOUGH AFRICA?
MMMMM…..I GATHER NOT VERY MANY
NOBODY WANTS TO BE PART OF THEIR FUTURE
I WANT TO BE LEFT HOLDING THE DYING BABIES
I WANT TO BE LECTURING THOSE BROTHERS AND SISTERS FROM OTHER MOTHERS
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE FROM THE CONTINENT TO SHARE YOUR SKILLS
I AM BLACK BRITISH MYSELF BUT STILL, I WANT TO HELP
TAKE A LEAF OUT OF MY BOOK AND PUT YOURSELVES THROUGH THEIR MILLS
THIS HAS BEEN MY INSPIRATION BEFORE THE AGE OF TWELVE
CAN ANY 21st CENTURY CHILD MATCH THAT?
THEY’RE SO ENGROSSED WITH BOYS RATHER THAN THE UNPRIVILEGED
THEY ALL PROBABLY WANT THE LATEST BAG ON THE MARKET
I AM NOT CONCERNED WITH ALL THAT TRASH
YOU CAN HAVE PLENTY OF BAGS, BUT IT’S NOT GOING TO COMPENSATE FOR THOSE BABIES AND BRING THEM BACK
NO MATTER WHAT OUR SKIN TONE WE’RE ALL BLACK
LET’S START FROM SCRATCH AND BEGIN WALKING IN THEIR TRACKS
THEY DIDN’T HAVE ANYTHING AT FIRST
BUT THE BLOOD DIAMONDS IS WHAT THE AFRICAN COMMUNITY FROM AROUND THE WORLD THIRST
THEY’VE MURDERED THEIR OWN FOR THE LOVE OF THEIR OWN
DON’T GO ON LIKE AFRICA DOESN’T HAVE HUMAN RIGHTS
BECAUSE THEY DO
GET THOSE MINDS RIGHT
FIGHT FOR OUR ROOTS THAT LAY DEEP WITHIN THESE PEOPLE
SOCIETY TEND TO ASSOCIATE AFRICA WITH “NASTY AND DIRTY”
SO WHAT GWAN WHEN DEATH COMES LOOKING FOR YOU?
THE COUNTRY THAT YOU THOUGHT LOVED YOU SO MUCH PISS ON YOUR GRAVES AND WRITE GRAFFITI
AFRICANS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO GO WHERE THEY CHOOSE TO GO
About the poet:
My name is Natalie Peterson. I totally adore poetry. I wrote my first ever poem at the age of 14. I had an absent 16 year period but returned to writing in 2011. Regained numerous writing certificates being publicized in “Forward Poetry” which can be obtained via Amazon. I’ve also had my personal books published and I’m trying to put out a 3rd. Apart from writing, I like drawing, listening to all genres of music, eating and drinking, and shopping. I also like participating in writing contests and competitions. So far, I’ve been shortlisted for 8 Forward Poetry anthologies, plus winning 2 competitions, coming 1st and 2nd within a year of each other.
Due to the fact I’m schizophrenic, this mental illness doesn’t prevent me from being creative. But I did want to have an occupation affiliated with beauty and/or designs. I’m currently in higher education (UK). As an individual whose highly creative over the X-mas period, I will be taking things a little easy and dedicating my time to the arts n’ crafts. And since I’ve been a child I’ve always wanted to plough and hand down my skills to the community – maybe one day. I’m of African heritage.
