THE SECOND POETRY PRIZE WINNER –
SUMMER 2022
is Stacey Graves
of Marietta, Georgia – USA
“Seasons:”
When the sun is out I love you better
A warm reminder we’re in this together
When the rain rolls in and grey clouds cover
You shift from best friend to gentle lover
The leaves fall around us, it’s still a crash landing
I’d rather be wrecked with you than on my own standing
The nights have gotten cold and the silence longer
you move in closer but the distance is stronger
When the sun was out I loved you better
Now it shines a light on why we shouldn’t be together

About the poet:
When I was in 5th grade I demanded that everyone stop calling me Stacey and start calling me Ace since that was “the core of me.” I meant this literally due to the spelling and figuratively as the persona with which I identified. To this day nobody has referred to me as Ace.
Instead, the class voted and dubbed me “Gravy” which grew on me over time. I realized Ace is an intimidating name clouded with expectation while Gravy is full of friendly deference. I wrote a poem today and I hope you enjoy it. If not, that’s gravy too. ~Stacey Graves
